Finch Elementary Media Specialist Verble Alexander awarded Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant

Verble Alexander, Media Specialist with Finch Elementary, applied for and was awarded a $4000 Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s Youth Literacy Grants are awarded to assist with implementing new or expanding youth literacy programs; to purchase new technology or equipment to support school youth literacy initiatives; or to purchase books, materials or software for youth literacy programs.

In August, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded more than $2 million in grants to 564 non-profit organizations, community groups, schools and libraries throughout the United States. Approximately 315,000 youth will be served by these grants.

“The hard work and dedication by these school media specialists is clearly reflected in their efforts to secure external funding for their school library media programs” said Dr. Warren Goetzel, APS Media Services Coordinator. “I am extremely proud of all media specialists as they tirelessly endeavor to support literacy in our community.”

Mrs. Alexander plans to use the grant to purchase Study Island for Finch, which will serve 240 students, grades 3 –5 at Finch. Study Island is a web based reading component students use to learn reading, social studies, science and language arts skills.

Mrs. Alexander is in her sixth year as Media Specialist at Finch Elementary.
