Atlanta Public Schools’ lone swimming pool, at King Middle School, has reopened and has been offering students as a chance to learn valuable swimming skills. These skills, which range from something as basic and crucial as drowning prevention to health and wellness, were captured in this informative video produced by APS Media Production Manager Scott King and narrated by Director of Media Relations Keith Bromery.
“Swimming is an important life skill,” said King Middle swim coach Justin Spears. “If kids were to be around any time of water, they would need to know how to survive and deal with those situations.”
The swimming instruction starts with basic breathing instruction and progresses to learning proper kicking and stroking techniques. But breathing is the essential skill, Spears notes, because it keeps kids from panicking once they hit the water. The instructional approach comes mostly in group situations but also is individualized to target specific students’ needs.
