APS Deputy Superintendent Kathy Augustine earns top national award

Dr. Kathy Augustine, APS’ Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, earned the 2010 Council of the Great City Schools/Pearson Education Curriculum Leadership Award today at the Council’s annual Curriculum and Research Directors Meeting in San Francisco. The award is presented annually to individuals who exemplify leadership, innovation and commitment in improving academic achievement of students in their respective school districts. This year’s other award recipient is Associate Superintendent Marilyn Doyle of Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Fla.

“These two outstanding urban educators were chosen among a number of candidates from the nation’s big-city school districts who have spearheaded programs that push reform forward in helping students strive for academic excellence,” said Michael Casserly, Executive Director of the Council. “As a result, their school districts have seen important achievement gains in reading and mathematics.” Each award winner received $1,000 and a plaque.

The Council of the Great City Schools is the only national organization exclusively representing the needs of urban public schools. Founded in 1956 and incorporated in 1961, the Council is located in Washington, D.C., where it works to promote urban education through legislation, research, media relations, instruction, management, technology, and other special projects.
