Students shine in Special Olympics track & field

UPDATE: Watch the video here.

This year’s Special Olympics event was spectacular! With DJ Mixx Master Mitch of Kiss 104.1 — himself a proud Mays High graduate — on the microphone, the athletes, volunteers and staff were especially motivated to do their best and have fun. The North Atlanta High School Band led the parade of athletes around the track for opening ceremonies. Aaron Fernander, executive director of the Office of Student Programs and Services, opened the games with such enthusiasm; the athletes were ready to begin to compete.

Thirty-five elementary, middle and high schools were represented, with approximately 300 athletes who competed in a multitude of events, including the 25M walk, 50M run, 100M run, softball throw, standing long jump and more. As the athletes crossed the finish line there were cheers and hugs from the volunteers.  The athletes were then escorted to the awards stand to receive their ribbon, showing their accomplishment proudly.

Each athlete was escorted by a student chaperone from one of the six high school ROTC programs. The chaperones took their athletes to their events and were seen cheering just as excitedly for their special friend to do their best. It was a perfect day for our Special Olympians and those that volunteered or came out to support our students.
