In back: Dexter Weldon, Instructional Coach for Language Arts and Social Studies This year APS high school students will read the classic Zora Neale Hurston novel Their Eyes Were Watching God as part of the annual “The Big Read,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. In partnership with Public Broadcasting Atlanta, the Atlanta History Center provided free copies of the book to participating APS high schools. The students received free posters, bookmarks, audio guides, and will engage in various hands-on activities and discussions.
