King Middle School honors teacher with help for Haiti

by talkupaps

King Middle School has a personal connection with the situation that has taken place in Haiti — eighth-grade team leader and physical science teacher Patricia Dunac is a native of Port Au Prince. In fact, her mother was home visiting family when the earthquake took place last month, and Ms. Dunac went days without knowing whereabouts of her mother (who is now safe in Miami). In honor of Ms. Dunac, King Middle  is supporting the efforts to provide relief to Haiti in many ways.

During the week of Jan. 24, the After School All Star Program challenged students to bring bottled water to be sent to Haiti. Students rose to the challenge and all donations were matched by Hosea Williams Feed the Homeless and Hungry. Currently, King’s Outward Bound Program and Cool Girls Program are selling candy-grams and cookie-grams for Valentine’s Day. These programs are charged with completing numerous community/volunteer service projects and when our students learned of the devastation in Haiti, they quickly rose to the challenge to assist. For the past two weeks, students and their program sponsors have been selling candy-grams and cookie-grams with personaized messages. These valentines will be delivered on Friday (Feb. 12) to the lucky recipients. All proceeds from these sales will be donated toward relief for Haiti.

In a couple of weeks, the King students will “donate to dance” at the school-wide Dance for Haiti. Barry Blackmon, seventh-grade English/language arts teacher and King’s Outward Bound program coordinator, will put his DJ skills to work and provide music for the dance. The money from all ticket sales will go towards relief for Haiti. Our students are anxious to assist and ready to “get down.”
