Author Milton Davis visits Towns Elementary

The noted author Milton Davis met with Towns Elementary School fifth-graders on Feb. 5 in conjunction in honor of Black History Month. Mr. Davis read a selection from Meji, a fantasy adventure series inspired by his research in African history and culture. He told the students that by writing adventures set in an imaginary Africa, he hopes to inspire others to find out more about the place he firmly believes is the true starting point of African-American history. He advised students on how to approach their next writing assignment, a personal narrative.

“Write about what you know,” he told them. “Even if it seems ordinary to you, it will be interesting to someone else.” He answered many questions from the general audience both about the heroes in his books and about his own path to becoming a writer. Afterwards, members of an accelerated reader lunch time book club who have been reading Meji together met with Davis and received personally signed copies of his books.
