Each year, during the month of January, a series of activities take place in and around the state to celebrate and commemorate the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Atlanta Public Schools is happy to announce that the 2010 MLK March Week activities will again offer the “Teach-In” guest lecture series for elementary and middle school students in the Atlanta Public Schools. “Teach-In” lecturers deliver Dr. King’s principles of non-violence to school children and are selected by the 2010 MLK March Committee founded by the late Rev. Dr. James Edward Orange both for their academic background and community involvement. The “Teach-In” events are scheduled for this week (Jan. 11-15). Select schools are participating in this educational and inspiring event. In order to make this a more intimate experience for students, APS will be working with 10 selected elementary schools chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. The district has specifically targeted grades 3-5, as there is a natural curriculum alignment in the Social Studies GPS. Each school has been scheduled for one day during this week, for one hour. The 2009 MLK March Week activities culminate with a “Youth Conference” on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) building. All interested students should be encouraged to participate in the conference. However, student participation is voluntary. For more information regarding the conference, please visit http://mlkmarchaaar.org/.
