Did you know that Oct. 23-31 was National Red Ribbon Week? Each year, millions of students across the country don red ribbons to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. To underscore that message, the counseling department at Parks Middle School joined with the Communities in Schools program and the West End Medical Center to help students host their first-annual health fair.

Parks parents and local businesses also participated in the event, which included dental screenings from Cool Smiles, information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as an appearance by members of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Students received goodie bags and instructions for a scavenger hunt that led them to various booths for additional information on healthy lifestyles.

Guidance counselor LaTarsha Mills McKie said to expect even bigger event next October.
