In conjunction with its Teacher of the Year celebration, the wellness program at F.L. Stanton Elementary held a lupus walk Oct. 9 at Mozley Park on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The school’s Teacher of the Year, Rhea Foster, lost her 24-year-old daughter to lupus in 2004. Many other families have been affected by this little-known disease. At this time there is no known cause or cure for lupus.
F.L. Stanton has been able to raise awareness of lupus and promote health and wellness through this walk. This event also taught the school’s students to care for and support others in their community. The proceeds raised from this walk will go directly to the Lupus Foundation of America, Georgia Chapter, for further research. The students, faculty, staff and parents of F.L. Stanton Elementary walked in memory of Toria Foster, and those who are still living with lupus.
Members of the Lupus Foundation of Georgia were also on hand to support and share information about lupus.
