Here’s what’s new for APS in 2009-2010

As Atlanta Public Schools continues its journey to excellence, expect a school year filled with plenty of changes, challenges and new opportunities. Here is a sneak preview of five things to expect this year …

1. Springdale Park Elementary opens its doors at 1274 Ponce de Leon Ave. APS’ first “green” school is also its first LEED-certified, and will offer Farm to School, recycling and composting programs. Follow the school by visiting its Web site: www.springdaleparkelementary.org.
2. The high school transformation continues as Frederick Douglass and Washington high schools become small learning communities. Douglass will offer academies for Communications and Journalism; Hospitality, Tourism and Marketing; Business and Entrepreneurship; and Engineering and Applied Technology. Washington will offer Banking, Finance & Investment; Early College; and a Senior Academy.
3. APS has merged Hill and Hope elementary schools. Hope will serve as host for the newly named Hill-Hope Elementary School.
4. The single-gender middle school academies – B.E.S.T Academy for boys and Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy for girls – are scheduled to move into new facilities in September and January, respectively.
5. APS’ Campus Portal for Parents will provide access to class schedules and attendance records. For more about the Campus Portal , visit your school office.
