Inman Middle student reads books, wins prize (as if she needed motivation)

Spend a few minutes speaking with Inman Middle School sixth-grader Vicky Walters, and you get the feeling she didn’t exactly have to enter a contest to read more. But that didn’t stop her from blazing through 19 books spanning 5,388 pages to finish among the top 10 in Georgia Tech’s fourth-annual Jacket2Jacket area reading contest. In fact, Walters, who placed eighth, was the only middle-school student to reach the top 10. (Inman Middle as a school logged 224,856.)

For her efforts, Walters will join the other winners at the Georgia Tech-Georgia women’s basketball game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, where they will be honored at halftime. Coincidentally, Walters’ three older sisters are current or former college basketball players.

Four APS teachers earn Master Teacher Certification

Four Atlanta Public Schools teachers have earned Master Teacher Certification from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission in 2010. They are Emily Boatright (Inman Middle, profiled here), Endia Way (Perkerson Elementary), TaiShara Twyman (Dobbs Elementary) and Wendy Baker (Inman Middle). To earn the Master Teacher Certification, candidates must have at least three years experience in the classroom on a Georgia Clear Renewal Certificate and demonstrate evidence linking their classroom instruction to student achievement and academic progress. Master Teachers serve as mentors and coaches for other teachers and are invited to attend conferences and seminars throughout the year as the voice of Georgia educators.

* UPDATE: Sixth-grade English/language arts teacher Wendy Baker, featured recently in Talk Up APS, learned she’s been named a Master Teacher!

Inman Middle School eighth-grade teacher Emily Boatright would like to say she’s joining a select company, but when it comes to Inman, Master Teachers almost seem like the rule and not the exception. Just as the 2009-10 school year winds to a close, Boatright learned that she was named a Master Teacher, which is mainly based on her students’ consistent ability to make gains on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs).

An award-winning Inman Middle School poet, in her own words

Congratulations are in order for Inman Middle School sixth-grader Tessa Szalkowski (pictured, above left) who finished sixth in the Metro RESA (greater Atlanta) division of the Georgia Department of Education’s Young Georgia Authors competition with her Claude Monet-inspired poem, “Femmes au Jardin” (“Women in the Garden”). In the video above, Szalkowski discusses the inspiration for the poem with her English/language arts teacher, Wendy Baker (pictured, above right) — and then reads the poem for us. If this is the kind of work she can do at the sixth-grade level, imagine what’s in store when she hits high school! Beautiful stuff.
