APS Teams Sweep Class AA-Region 6 Softball Playoff Spots; South Atlanta, Therrell Battle to Keep Football Playoff Hopes Alive

The Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy softball team had its best season in the history of the program, with an overall record of 13-1, and is one of four Atlanta Public Schools teams from Class AA-Region 6 to advance to next week’s state playoffs.

Atlanta Public Schools softball teams claimed all four state playoff spots this week in the Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA) Class AA-Region 6. The teams are South Atlanta, Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA), Therrell and Washington.

The group is led by South Atlanta (14-5 overall, 8-2 in Class AA-Region 6), which won the region title with an 8-3 win over CSKYWLA in the region championship game on Wednesday. CSKYWLA (13-1, 10-1 in the region) went into the game undefeated, having beaten South Atlanta twice this season (11-10 and 24-12). While the Eagles had to settle for second place, they finished with the best regular season record in school history.

By winning the region championship, the first one in school history, South Atlanta goes into the state playoffs as the No. 1 seed from Class AA-Region 6. The Hornets will host Oglethorpe County, Oct. 12, in the first round. Oglethorpe County is the No. 4 seed from Class AA-Region 8.

CSKYWLA is the No. 2 seed and will host Monticello, the No. 3 seed from Class AA-Region 8, Oct. 12 or Oct. 13.

Therrell (7-8, 5-5) claimed the No. 3 seed in the region and will travel to Elbert County, the No. 2 seed from Class AA-Region 8, for the first round of the state playoffs, Oct. 12 or Oct. 13.

Washington (5-8, 4-6) is the No. 4 seed in the region and will visit Region 8-champion Social Circle (Walton County) in the first round, Oct. 12 or  13.

FOOTBALL
As the regular season begins to wind down, every game has state playoff implications.

Washington’s playoff chances took a bit of a hit Thursday night, as the Bulldogs were beaten by Hapeville Charter (Fulton County), 34-0. Washington’s record dropped to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in Class AA-Region 6. Bulldogs are now in fifth place in the region, one game out of one of the four playoff spots.

South Atlanta (2-5 overall, 0-3 in Class AA-Region 6) and Therrell (2-4, 0-2) will face each other tonight at 7:30 p.m., at Lakewood Stadium, for Therrell’s homecoming. Both teams are winless in the region and must pick up a victory to stay alive in the race for one of the region’s four state playoff spots. Therrell leads in the all-time series between the two teams, 7-6, but South Atlanta won the most recent meeting, 34-30, last season.

Mays (4-1, 3-0 in Class AAAAAA-Region 5) at Douglas County (4-2, 2-2), 7:30 p.m., Tiger Stadium in Douglasville

Douglass (3-2, 2-1 in Class AA-Region 6) at Forest Park (Clayton) (0-7), 7:30 p.m., Tara Stadium in Jonesboro

South Atlanta Hosts Rapper Dee-1, PricewaterhouseCoopers for Financial Literacy Program

Rapper and Louisiana State University graduate David “Dee-1” Augustine performed before a packed house at the South Atlanta High School auditorium. Dee-1 and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP have teamed up to spread a message of financial literacy to high school students across the nation.

David “Dee-1” Augustine wants young people to be what he calls “The 3 R’s”:  Real, Righteous and Relevant. But he also wants them to be financially aware and astute.

That is why the math teacher turned rapper has hooked up with one of the world’s leading financial firms – PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) – to spread the word to high school students about the importance of financial literacy and wealth management.  Dee-1 stopped by South Atlanta High School on Thursday to talk to students about living a positive lifestyle and being smart with their money, once they earn it.

“As a society, we always stress, get the money, get the money, get the money,” said Dee-1, who graduated from Louisiana State University in 2009 with a degree in business management/marketing. “But we don’t talk about the proper way to manage money.”

Dee-1 has lived his message. He made regular payments on his student loans while working as a teacher in Baton Rouge, while continuing to pursue his dream of being a performer. When he signed a record deal in 2014, he paid off his loans in full and still drives a 1998 Honda Accord. This is the premise for his first single “Sallie Mae Back.” Watch the video here.

Dee-1’s performance at South Atlanta is part of a five-year, $200 million PwC initiative, designed to help young people across America become more financially literate. The project includes a full classroom curriculum focused on helping young people manage their finances.

“We are committed to youth education and financial literacy,” said PwC executive Shelley Giberson. “We see so many kids graduating from college without any knowledge of financial literacy, and so we want to address that. Dee-1 is able to connect with students in such a compelling and entertaining way.”

Dee-1, who was born in New Orleans but plans to relocate to Atlanta soon, is scheduled to release his first album in February 2017, “Slingshot David.” He said it will feature more positive and conscientious songs like “Sallie Mae Back.”

“I’m a very spiritual person, and I know God put us all here for a purpose,” he said. “I started rapping in college because I saw a need for positive young, black, male role models. I want to use this platform to wake our young people up and help them.”

In her four years at South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice, Jasmine Crawford has received many excellent opportunities to develop her tremendous intellectual potential. With the support of her family, teachers, and counselor, she was able to excel in a rigorous academic program which prepared her for future academic success at Emory University where she plans to major in psychology. Jasmine is grateful to all who supported her throughout her high school career. She looks forward to giving back to her community through volunteerism and a career in occupational therapy.

APS students sign on the dotted line during Project GRAD Atlanta’s College Signing Day

Students and parents at Deerwood Academy and several other Atlanta Public Schools ate lunch together on Thursday for Family Engagement Day.

College-bound APS seniors got their moment in the sun Thursday during the fourth-annual Project GRAD-Atlanta College Signing Day. During the ceremony, parents and college representatives watch as each student signs on the dotted line at the school they will attend in the fall.

Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) provides activities and support so that economically disadvantaged students chart a path to college by. The program also offers up to $4,000 in scholarships to Brumley-GRAD scholars along with support at the college level. Now in its 10th year, Project GRAD currently serves students at Booker T. Washington High School, The New Schools at Carver and South Atlanta Educational Complex, along with six middle schools and 16 elementary schools.
