Beginning next school year, Atlanta Public Schools will have an all new safety and security team in place to protect its students, employees and campuses. APS wants to fill 55 School Resource Officer positions as well as several senior law enforcement roles over the next several weeks for its new in-house Atlanta Public Schools Safety and Security Department.
The positions include:
- Chief of Police
- Security Operations Director
- Emergency Compliance Manager
- Lieutenants
- Sergeants
- Investigators
- Dispatchers
- Alarm Response Officers
- Training Officers
- Part-time Officers
The Atlanta Public Schools Safety and Security Department wants to hire individuals who philosophically align with its social emotional learning approach, and a national model-TRIAD that involves law enforcement officers serving as informal counselors and educators.
The National Association of School Resource Officers is partnering with APS to facilitate SRO training. They will be trained in positive behavior support interventions and other student-centered services such as social emotional learning and conflict resolution consistency. Additionally, the SROs will have staffing assignments and focused training to foster a safe, orderly teaching and learning environment in Atlanta Public Schools.
The new department will launch by the first day of school, August 3, 2016, with full-time, law enforcement employees who will serve as School Resource Officers assigned to middle and high schools to support students, staff and parents and to secure its campuses.
The APS Safety and Security Department officers will have all the powers of any peace or police officer in Georgia. As sworn officers, they will enforce the law, ensure student and staff safety, as well as have a responsibility to take action when necessary to restore order and make arrests anywhere within Atlanta city limits.
In January 2016, the Atlanta Board of Education approved a resolution to create the district’s own in-house Safety and Security Department. The district currently contracts with the Atlanta Police Department and external law enforcement partners to keep its students, staff and schools safe. APS joins other metro area school districts that fully control their police department. APD will continue to be an integral partner in promoting safety and security for Atlanta Public Schools.
