APS Squads Dominate Metro Cheerleading Competition

Benjamin E. Mays High School won the high school Class AAAAA and Grand Champion titles at the fifth annual Atlanta Public Schools Metro-Atlanta Cheerleading Competition held last Saturday at Mays.

A cardinal rule in any competitive sport is this: Protect your house! Never lose at home!

Last Saturday, the Benjamin E. Mays competitive cheerleading squad did just that at the fifth annual Atlanta Public Schools Metro-Atlanta Cheerleading Competition held in the Mays High School gym.

The Raiders won the Class AAAAA championship and were crowned the event’s high school “Grand Champion,” an honor awarded to the best overall squad in any cheerleading competition. KIPP Vision won the Grand Champion title in the middle school division of what has become the top cheerleading competition in metro Atlanta.

Approximately 4,500 spectators packed Mays’ gym to see the high school and middle school competitions, according to APS Assistant Director of Athletics Rendell Jackson. He said the event started five years ago as just a middle school event. A high school division was added the following year and the fan interest, number of teams, and level of competitiveness has grown steadily each year.

Inman Middle School won the middle school Class AA title in the competition.

More than 30 teams combined participated in the event, which served as the perfect warm up for this weekend’s region competitions. Those squads advancing out of the region will qualify for the sectional and state competitions, November 13-14 in Columbus.

“This was the most competitive middle school competition we’ve ever had,” Jackson said. On the varsity level, Jackson said Mays took the Class AAAAA title back from Martin Luther King Jr. High School in DeKalb County, the 2014 winners.

“The year before (2013), Mays won,” Jackson said. “MLK won last year but this year Mays came back and won again. It’s a good, competitive rivalry. The level of competition and the level of recognition of our event has grown so much over the past five years.”

Ralph Bunche Middle School won the middle school Class AAA title in the competition.

Metro Cheer Squads Prep for Regionals at APS Cheer Competition

The APS Metro-Atlanta Cheer Competition will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, at Benjamin E. Mays High School. Varsity competition starts at 10 a.m. Middle schools will compete following the completion of the varsity competition.

The cheers, chants and stunts are bound to be a lot more involved than that when Benjamin E. Mays High School hosts the fifth annual Atlanta Public Schools Metro-Atlanta Cheerleading Competition, Saturday (Oct. 31), beginning at 10 a.m.

More than 30 competition cheer squads from across the metro Atlanta will compete in four separate divisions this year – varsity, junior varsity, co-ed and middle school. Last year’s varsity champion, Mays, will seek to defend its title on its home mats.

Atlanta Public Schools Athletic Director Jasper Jewell said the event has grown steadily in popularity as metro area squads sought a quality competition that was closer to their schools.

“Our competition has become popular and sparks the interest of so many schools in the metro area because of its location, Jewell said. “There are not a lot of options inside of I-285. Also, teams know they will see good competition here, and with regional competitions beginning in the first week of November, our event provides a great warm up.”

More than 30 competition cheer squads from around the metro area will compete in four separate divisions — varsity, junior varsity, co-ed and middle school.

Along with the growth of the event, Jewell said he has seen growth and improvement in competitive cheerleading in the district over the past five years.

“I remember when the only competition squad we had was Mays,” Jewell said. “This year, we have full competition mats in all of our high schools and all of our middle schools. And more of our squads are entering competitions outside of ours. Last year, for the first time we had three teams qualify for the state [cheerleading] meet – Douglass, Grady and Mays. It’s a great opportunity for our student-athletes.”

Seven APS Schools Awarded GraduateFIRST Grants

Students at Miles Elementary School will benefit from the GraduateFIRST grant from the Georgia Department of Education

Seven APS schools were recently awarded a federally funded grant through the Georgia Department of Education and GraduateFIRST that will be used to help increase the district’s graduation rate and close the achievement gap for students with disabilities.

Georgia’s GraduateFIRST program has redefined the state’s approach to raising graduation rates for students with disabilities with dramatic results-an increase of 37 percent in four years.

The program has worked successfully throughout Georgia with middle and high schools for the last six years, as well as with elementary schools during the current school year. Administration and faculty, with support from a Collaboration Coach through the local Georgia Learning Resource System, are provided with training and support in order to implement strategies to meet students’ needs in the areas of academic performance, behavior, and attendance effectively.

King Middle music teacher Audrey Reese honored by Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation

Audrey Reese, string teacher at King Middle School, is one of five teachers selected nationally to be honored by the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. To receive The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation Award teachers must:

Instill a love of music in their students through instrumental instruction in grades K-12
Have the passion, dedication and leadership skills to persevere under difficult circumstances
Give generously of their time, energy and talent, exceeding what is expected of music educators
Demonstrate creativity regardless of availability of instruments, materials, and classroom space and budget limitations
Inspire students and challenge them to attain the highest level of musicianship
Encourage musical growth through ongoing individual and group performance, auditions and evaluations

Reese is a graduate of Atlanta Public Schools and received her music degree from Columbus University on a full music scholarship. She is a veteran APS teacher with 30 years of experience teaching and performing. Reese is described as one who has given her all to give the gift of music to her students. She is being sponsored by Guitar Center, Inc. and as a result of this honor Reese will receive the following:

A weekend in New York City for two
A trophy presented in a ceremony at Carnegie Hall
$10,000 for her personal use

APS robotics teams participate in 100 Black Men of Atlanta FIRST LEGO League competition

Robotics teams from Parkside and Towns elementary schools, B.E.S.T. Academy, Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy, King and Inman middle schools and Drew Charter School competed in the Project Success FIRST LEGO League, sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc., on Dec. 11 at B.E.S.T. Academy.

Implemented in 2005, the robotics program was designed to inspire elementary and middle school students’ interest in science and technology through exciting mentor-based activities. FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) is an international nonprofit organization that aspires to transform culture by making science, math, engineering and technology just as cool as sports.

Elementary students compete in the FIRST LEGO League. Middle and high school students vie for top honors in FIRST Tech Challenge competitions. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta manages four teams, with a goal of creating robotics mentoring and resources to more APS students.

Famous black inventor and scientist, Dr. Lonnie Johnson, an active member of 100 Black Men of Atlanta, works closely with the initiative and houses the 100’s Robotics Program at his laboratory. Dr. Johnson’s donation of time and resources provides the teams an opportunity to see scientists at work, while supplying furniture, computers, software and the services of an IT specialist and engineer.

During Saturday’s main event, students milled in and out of the gym, monitoring the action and waiting for their chance to compete. After one victory, members of the B.E.S.T. Academy team shook hands and congratulated their competitors.

King Middle School hopes to make a splash at the upcoming Neighborhood Celebration this Saturday (Oct. 2), and yes, we’d love to have them bring their newly renovated, reopened and reinvigorating pool — the only one of its kind in the district. King Middle serves a pivotal role in the south Atlanta area as one of the feeder schools to Maynard H. Jackson High School (this year’s host site for the Celebration).

The second annual APS Neighborhood Celebration will take place between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2, at Maynard H. Jackson High School (801 Glenwood Ave. SE, Atlanta GA, 30316). Part pep rally, part open house, the “All for All, One by One” event will celebrate our neighborhood schools through student performances, a “Parade of Schools,” school displays and a canned food drive benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Hosea Feed The Hungry & Homeless. King Middle School students get back in the pool

Atlanta Public Schools’ lone swimming pool, at King Middle School, has reopened and has been offering students as a chance to learn valuable swimming skills. These skills, which range from something as basic and crucial as drowning prevention to health and wellness, were captured in this informative video produced by APS Media Production Manager Scott King and narrated by Director of Media Relations Keith Bromery.

APS middle-schoolers state their case in CIS Atlanta’s inaugural moot court competition

Debate-team students representing all four of APS’ School Reform Teams squared off Wednesday at Communities in Schools Atlanta‘s First Annual Middle School Moot Court by presenting their oral arguments for a select issue that affects Georgia students. The competition featured presentations by Kennedy (SRT-1) vs. Parks (SRT-2) and King vs. B.E.S.T. Academy in an argument of whether to overturn a recent Georgia law raising the compulsory school attendance age to 18 from 16. (King and Parks argued for keeping the age at 18.)

The competition was held at the Fulton County Government’s Assembly Hall, and the students were really put the test in presenting their arguments to a panel led by Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Carol W. Hunstein. Students made about a five-minute argument and then fielded questions from the panel. The winning team will be announced as an awards ceremony on May 11.

Meet the Atlanta Families’ Awards winners: Rendell Jackson

We continue our Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education winners with a look at Rendell Jackson, a physical-education teacher at King Middle School. Jackson is in his third year at King, after teaching in the Douglas and Fulton county school systems. A former pro football player in the Arena and Canadian football leagues, Jackson is also a published poet! He also earned an ING Run For Something Better Teacher Coordinator Award of Excellence.

For his Atlanta Families’ Awards project, Jackson plans to implement an aquatics program at King. His project aims to provide exposure to the benefits of swimming beyond recreation and plans work collaboratively with local high schools and the YMCA. The program will be based on the GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow guidelines, designed to prepare 11-to-14-year-olds to take Red Cross lifeguarding certification.

“There are a great deal of accidental drownings among children over the summer months, and two-thirds of them have been African Americans,” Jackson pointed out. “How crazy is that? I realized I had the tools at my disposal to save lives.” That includes a pool on the King campus.
