The City of Atlanta Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Routes to School program partnered with Humphries Elementary School to activate a Play Street on School Dr., so students would have a safe space to play right outside their school.
“A Play Street is a concept that encourages families to walk or bike their kids home from school instead of waiting long periods of time in a car to pick them up,” DOT Safe Routes to School manager Nichole Hollis said. “It’s a way to get kids outside, to have fun, but also have community connection as well.”
Humphries Elementary School students, families, faculty, and staff all came out to enjoy a variety of games and activities, while also engaging with several community partners who could inform them about the different resources available to help them take alternate routes to school.
The Play Street had bikes, soccer, sidewalk chalk, and a plethora of mini-games and activities. Skylar Williams and Leia Lowery, third-grade students at Humphries Elementary School, walked together across the street after school to join the fun.
Williams and Lowery enjoy riding bikes and playing double-dutch and were excited to have a safe place to play after school.
“I feel like children should have places to play to get their minds off the work they’ve been doing all day,” Williams said. “(Play Street) is amazing.”
Over the last few years, the DOT Safe Routes to School program has shown up to Humphries Elementary School to help with clean up on School Dr., introduce partners who provided bikes for the school, and put on events like the Walk to School program to help promote safe ways to walk or ride to school. “This means a lot,” Humphries Elementary School principal Jaron Trimble said. “So many of our students are coming from apartment communities, where play areas aren’t as readily available and they have to dodge and look out for cars. Even if we can do this just once, it means a lot.”
