Calendra Williams, a first-grade teacher at Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy, has been selected as a 2025 Don Cargill STEM Scholar by the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers (GYSTC) for her outstanding efforts to engage and improve student learning in STEM disciplines.
As a part of this special recognition, Williams and Hollis Innovation Academy will receive a $500 grant in January to purchase STEM education materials for her classroom. She plans to utilize those materials for a STEM project called the “Birdhouse Design Challenge,” where her students will build their own birdhouses. Students will learn about birds, their habitats, and what they need to survive and stay safe. Students will also collaborate as a group to design and create special birdhouses that can be placed outside for real birds to use.

“I was just excited to receive the award,” she said. “I’m excited because we get to build, collaborate, show our creativity, and help the environment. This is something that they can see throughout their tenure at Hollis Innovation Academy.”
