Celebrity alumni return to Harper-Archer Middle School

Since January, Harper-Archer Middle School’s eighth-graders have been working hard to improve their writing abilities and prepare for a school essay competition. Verna P. Colson, the school’s writing coach, made sure each received a thrilling compensation.

Teams A, B, and C competed in the essay contest with three students from Team A — Marvin Nash, Brionna Blair, and Miquan Cunningham — placing in the contest. However, Team B had 100 percent participation and were rewarded with a pizza party.

Colson, along with four other helpful co-workers, made sure all the the students were rewarded. They invited V-103 radio announcer Lil Bankhead, singer Lil Shun Hendrix and rap artist Young Dro to perform for students.

Harper-Archer Middle and Communities In Schools of Atlanta unite for mentoring program

Harper-Archer Middle School’s (HAMS) counseling department and Communities in Schools (CIS) of Atlanta have joined forces to provide over 30 Harper-Archer students with tutorial and social support during the school day. This additional support comes in the form of the newly formed HAMS Mentoring Program, created by Lamar J. Young, guidance counselor, and Joi Fuller, a CIS of Atlanta graduation coach.

Congrats to Harper-Archer: APS middle school football champs!

Harper-Archer defeated Parks in the APS middle school football championship held Thursday evening at Lakewood Stadium. The game had been rained out on Saturday and was rescheduled. Our own Scott C. King was out there to capture the excitement, and interviewed Harper-Archer head coach Jerry Willard here. (Willard is pictured above, middle.)

Willard expanded on the team’s success today:

The reason for our success was that our players never gave up. In the second half, we were down and had not done a good job blocking in the first half. In the second half our, players played with emotion and put their hearts in the game. Our line started blocking and we began running plays with some misdirection that slowed their defense. I think the biggest key to our success not only in last night’s game but in our entire season was our defense. We gave up very few points by tackling well and getting turnovers. The most points scored on us the entire season in one game was eight, which occurred in last night’s championship! Lastly, the support from our principal, staff, and parents has been tremendous. We were allowed to practice long ours most of the week. This allowed players who needed help in their studies to attend the after school program and/or tutorial and still make it to most of the practice.

Football Coaching Shot IIWe continue our look at the APS middle school football championship game today at 5:30 p.m. at Lakewood Stadium between Harper-Archer and Parks with a look at the Parks team, courtesy head coach Attica Landers:

What has been the key to your team’s success?
The key to my football team’s success are a number of contributions. First, the dedication on behalf on the coaching staff as well as the players. Second, the players’ ability to commit themselves on the field. Finally, the consistency on my football team to play at a high level of intensity through the season.

What will be the key to winning Thursday’s game?
The key to winning Thursday’s game is that the Mustangs will have to play aggressive and play up to the potential that we the coaches know they have. No one has actually witnessed our team play its best. On Thursday, the guys will have to reach a level of excellence we all have yet to see.

Who is your offensive player to watch?
Well, lets see. Although the Mustangs have a number of offensive weapons, I will let you in on one player in particular. His name is William Barnett, and he starts at running back. William is an eighth-grader and a second-year starter. He is a strong young man who is an all-purpose player.

Middle school football championship game: Harper-Archer

The APS middle school football season’s championship game between Harper-Archer and Parks was rained out last Saturday, and has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at Lakewood Stadium.

The game features two undefeated teams, with both sporting 6-0 records. Both teams also sport high-scoring offenses with stifling defenses; Harper-Archer has registered three shutouts, while Parks  has posted four. Because they played in different divisions, the two teams didn’t play the same opponent so there’s no real way to compare the two against head-to-head competition.

So who will win? Hard to say. But what we can do is ask the respective coaches what they think of their respective team’s success this season, and their opportunity to win today. We asked each coach the same set of questions, and here are their answers.

SRT-4 holds first-ever open house and fall festival

APS’ School Reform Team 4 held its inaugural Parent Center Open House and Fall Festival on Oct. 23, 2009. The event was held at the SRT-4 office at Harper-Archer Middle. SRT-4 showcased its newly renovated parent center, located at the SRT office, and exposed parents to all of the resources available for them such as the lending library, GED preparation classes, and monthly parenting workshops through SRT-4 Parentville.

SRT-4 elementary and middle schools were invited to display tables with information about their schools and parents also had an opportunity to join the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Translators from the APS ESOL department were available to assist non-English speaking families. A photo booth provided by Officer V. Campbell and the Harper-Archer Photography Club was available for free family photos. Free enrichment workshops were presented by Fulton County Health and Wellness, Consumer Credit Counseling Services and the Atlanta Housing Authority. A wonderful time was had by all, and SRT-4 is already planning for the second annual event next year!

Community meetings scheduled on latest APS high school transformations

A series of community meetings is scheduled for students, parents and the public to discuss the third wave of the Atlanta Public Schools’ high school transformation initiative. The latest wave of high school transformations involves Mays, North Atlanta and Grady high schools.

The district’s high school transformation initiative creates smaller, 21st century learning centers where students receive a world-class education and graduate with more options for lifelong success.

The first meeting of this phase of high school transformations will be held at Mays High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. The address is 3450 Benjamin E. Mays Drive, SW, Atlanta. Feeder schools for Mays High are Young and Harper-Archer middle schools.

The second meeting will be held at North Atlanta High at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. The address is 2875 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta. Sutton Middle is the feeder school for North Atlanta.

The third meeting will be held at Grady High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4. The address is 929 Charles Allen Drive, NE Atlanta. Feeder schools for Grady High School are Coan, Inman and King middle schools.
