The APS Summer Academy is designed to provide rising students with a preview to the Common Core State Standards in reading and math and prepare students for a successful start in their next grade level.
Summer Academy will take place June 4 – June 27. All rising 3rd through rising 8th graders who attend a Title 1 APS school are eligible to enroll in the traditional Summer Academy. Rising 9th grade students are eligible to participate in the 9th grade Summer Academy program held at their regional high school site.
Priority will be given to students who have scored 815 or below on the mathematics portion of the 2013 or 2014 CRCT, as well as students who score below 800 on the reading portion of the 2014 CRCT.
There will not be a CRCT re-test during or after Summer Academy. The re-test for the CRCT will be given on May 21-23. Attending Summer Academy does not satisfy the requirements for promotion to the next grade level for students who have not passed the CRCT in grades 3, 5, and 8.
Elementary/Middle School Summer Academy will provide students with exposure to the mathematics and literacy curriculum in their rising grade level. Teachers will provide instruction utilizing the beginning of the year district-created units in the areas of mathematics and literacy. As such, summer school is not designed to provide remediation or provide opportunities for promotion, but rather expose at-risk students to content in their rising grade-level.
9th Grade Summer Academy is a four-week program that will remediate power standards in Language Arts and Mathematics.
High School Programs will provide students with the opportunity for credit recovery, as well as acceleration and enrichment.
High school programming will be offered using three different delivery models:
Traditional – This option will provide students the opportunity to meet face-to-face in a school building to receive instruction. Approximately 1,200 students (300 students/site) can be served.
Blended Learning – This option will provide students the opportunity to engage in virtual learning using GradPoint virtual programming in the school site with a teacher serving as facilitator. Approximately 400 students (100 students/site) can be served in a self paced environment.
Atlanta Virtual Academy – This option will provide students the opportunity to engage in online learning off-site and can be used for credit recovery or acceleration. AVA requires one face-to-face meeting at the beginning. A maximum of 500 students can be served.
