North Carolina Outward Bound and Outward Bound Atlanta co-host “An Extraordinary Evening With Outward Bound”

Outward Bound Atlanta and North Carolina Outward Bound recently co-hosted “An Extraordinary Evening with Outward Bound” reception at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation headquarters in Atlanta for local stakeholders and supporters. The evening was marked by moving presentations from a parent, a student and a school administrator, all of whom have seen and felt the power of Outward Bound programs. More than 100 key stakeholders gathered to learn more about Outward Bound’s impact in this region. Carolyn Wood and her son, Grady High student Daniel Wilco, made a joint presentation to share the impact of Outward Bound programming from the perspective of a student and parent. Jeffrey Brown Jr., a senior at The New Schools at Carver, has been involved with OB for the past three years. Due to Brown’s outstanding leadership, he won a wilderness scholarship for a 21-day course in the North Carolina mountains this past summer. (See related story here.)

R.E.A.L. Men Read literacy project targets APS second-graders

More than 180 male volunteers will fan out among Atlanta Public Schools’ 4,000 second-graders to help boost literacy through the R.E.A.L. Men Read program. Started in Chicago’s public school system and then to Houston, R.E.A.L. (“read, excel, achieve, lead”) Men Read hopes to solve two ongoing concerns: the lack of visible male role models who read, and the lack of books available in the homes of young students.

The volunteers will make monthly visits to the elementary schools over the next sixth months, introducing the students to books by reading to them, and then offering a seventh book for summer reading. The program enjoyed a kickoff event on Nov. 9 at The New Schools at Carver, with a reception featuring a version of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” by Carver School of the Arts senior DeAngela Glaze. Motivational speaker Mike Howard served as MC, and the program featured appearances by SRT-3 Executive Director Michael Pitts, Atlanta City Council member Ceasar Mitchell, APS literacy director Monishae Mosley-O’Neill, a videotaped speech by Ambassador Andrew Young, and an appearance by Greg Worrell, president of Scholastic Classroom and Library Group.

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta gets families excited about reading

We just got this great news from Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta…

In many schools, low levels of parental engagement can pose challenges for students and school staff alike. For that reason, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta, an award-winning, Atlanta-based dropout prevention organization, makes parental engagement a priority at its 75 partner schools in Atlanta and DeKalb County. When the organization was one of just three programs across the country presented with the chance host a family literacy event in partnership with Reading Is Fundamental and Pitney Bowes, they immediately seized the opportunity.

“We look for every opportunity to involve parents. We believe in building genuine relationships with our parents and empowering them to get more involved in the educations of their children. Having a strong base of support at home is a critical part of kids succeeding in school,” said Patricia Pflum, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Atlanta.

The event was hosted at CIS of Atlanta partner school, Cleveland Avenue Elementary, on May 20 and invitations were extended to the parents and students of CIS partner school Heritage Academy. Both schools are a part of the organization’s Reading Is Fundamental program which provides each student in participating schools with three new books to build their home libraries each year. CIS of Atlanta is the largest Reading Is Fundamental partner in the state of Georgia, distributing more than 22,000 new books to over 6,700 young people annually.

Outward Bound Atlanta helps City Council learn the ropes at The New Schools at Carver

After years of discussing the possibility, Atlanta city officials were able to take advantage of Outward Bound Atlanta’s (OBA) executive leadership programs.  On Feb. 19, 17 members of Atlanta’s City Council spent their afternoon engaged in an OBA leadership course designed to promote leadership, problem solving and trust.

Thanks to the leadership of Council President Ceasar Mitchell, and the willingness of council members, the leadership program was included as part of their Annual Retreat. The Council’s retreat is a full-day experience designed to bring members together in a dynamic way to support their efforts to improve the city of Atlanta.  While the day began with a focus on finances and strategic planning, the later portion of the day used Outward Bound’s unique programming to explore new ways to meet the challenges ahead. Taking learning out of a traditional classroom setting, the Council engaged in a series of mental and physical challenges on the Low Ropes Course located on the campus of The New Schools at Carver.

Council members were also addressed by Dr. Darian Jones, principal of Carver’s School of Health Sciences and Research. Dr. Jones shared how the Council’s work impacts the community and the students of the school specifically. He also mentioned how collaborating with Outward Bound Atlanta has supported The New Schools at Carver’s monumental increase of their graduation rate from 14.4 percent in 2002 to 94 percent this past May.
