This past summer the Center for Learning and Leadership welcomed summer interns who come from APS’ 21st Century Atlanta Scholar Program. Our own communications office has had the benefit of two interns in particular, and would love to show off some of their work this week. First off we’d like to tell you a little bit about Lyntoria Newton, a graduate of Carver’s School of the Arts. As part of her studies at Hampshire College in film production, Newton worked with the APS Media Production team of Scott King and Armon Moore to enhance her skill set.
Carver School of the Arts
We took the opportunity to pop in on the APS/Woodruff Arts Center’s Summer Academy for the Arts and Sciences on Wednesday. We paid a visit to dance class being taught by Garden Hills Elementary‘s Audrey Waters (who’s subbing for Rhonda Price of Carver’s School of the Arts). Save the date and time (July 2, 1:30 p.m.) for the final performances from all of the disciplines being taught at the Summer Academy: chorus, dance, music and theater. The location is TBA. Check out the previous article on the camp here.
Erica Thomas, Class of 2009 graduate of Carver’s School of Arts and currently a Berklee College of Music student in Boston, was invited to perform with her group Mélange at a Haiti relief concert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Jan. 29. At Carver, Thomas was class president, recipient of the Dr. Beverly L. Hall Project GRAD Award, Ray Kroc Award, and the Faculty Cup Award. At Young Middle School, she was the original vocalist for the jazz band under the direction of Robert Jeffrey, and at Centennial Place she was in the APS Honor Chorus, and played Dorothy in The Wiz under the direction of Angela Allen. APS prepared her well for this moment!

Hard work and determination draws media spotlight on Carver’s School of the Arts
Carver’s School of the Arts allows students to pursue various avenues ranging from drama to music technology. As a result, they were recently featured on CBS News’ “Cool Schools” series, which highlighted work from the drama, music technology, dance, band and the choir departments. After-school programs available to all Carver students were also filmed. Check out these clips on the CBS Web site.
Also, look for an entertaining performance of the musical Beauty and the Beast at the end of the year. Boy, they are on a roll!
