Pearls of Purpose Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of the Nu Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. based in Atlanta, awarded five seniors from Atlanta Public Schools (APS) scholarships for college during its 27th Annual Pink Pearl Mother-Daughter Luncheon held April 26 at the Marriott Marquis Atlanta Hotel.

Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy High School Jasmine Woodard, who ranks fifth in her senior class, was awarded the top honor – the Ruby Yvette Simpson Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Woodard is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, the National Beta Club, and served as a page in Georgia House of Representatives. She plans to attend Howard University this fall to major in psychology, and aspires to become a research child psychologist.
Woodard was followed by Mylecia Sims of Carver Early College, who was awarded $3,000 and plans to attend the University of Georgia. Alexandria Jones of Booker T. Washington High School, who plans to attend the University of Georgia and Jayla Palmer of South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice, who plans to attend Emory University, were both awarded $2,250. Christopher Smith of South Atlanta School of Computer Animation & Design, who is in the top five percent of his graduating class and the only male honoree, received a $1,000 scholarship and plans to attend Georgia College and State University. The scholarships were presented by the Foundation’s president Cynthia R. Parks and Education Committee chairman Pamela D. Kirkland-Pearson, who is also an educator at M. Agnes Jones Elementary.
The theme for this year’s luncheon was “Educators Empowering Youth: Teachers Do Make a Difference” and among the 2014 honorees were APS Special Education Assistive Technology Specialist Tykeisha Lewis and retired APS music teacher Roselyn Lewis, who is the co-founder and executive director of the Urban Youth Harp Ensemble, Inc.
The Foundation hosts its scholarship luncheon annually to provide scholarships that will assist Atlanta Public and Fulton County high school seniors pursue their post-secondary education, and to honor outstanding women in the community.
