Two schools in APS and three charter schools in APS zones have gotten into the holiday spirit – of Georgia Arbor Day, that is, with projects at each school complete with community partners, presentations, and tree plantings courtesy of Trees Atlanta.
The organization helped coordinate educational programs and tree plantings at these schools part of the BeltLine Arboretum Education Program. 2010 Georgia Arbor Day activities are in partnership with Trees Atlanta, Atlanta Public Schools, Tim Womick, the Georgia Forestry Commission, and the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE).
Brown Middle School and Grady High School along with KIPP STRIVE Academy, Atlanta Charter Middle and Tech High all received presentations about the importance of trees, climate science and actions that young leaders can do to make a difference. Many were impressed. “The ACE presentation was on-point with current climate science, cool animation, and full of inspiration,” Grady High student Abena Amoakih said. According to Robby Astrove at Trees Atlanta: “Both ACE and Tim Womick deliver compelling presentations that examine our relationship with Atlanta’s urban forest and our responsibility as young leaders to take action. And that’s what exactly happened.”
