King Middle School Teacher Tara Johnson Wins 11Alive Class Act Award

Atlanta Public Schools teacher Tara Johnson has won the 11Alive Class Act Award for her outstanding leadership at King Middle School and her ability to engage and ignite her seventh-grade students. 11Alive’s Donna Lowry surprised Johnson with the award in November during a visit to the Southeast Atlanta school.

King Middle School teacher Kandy Wilkinson nominated Johnson for the award after observing how effectively she was able to seize and hold her students’ attention.

“She connects with the students and she gets them interested and intrigues them with the lesson,” said Wilkinson. Johnson’s positive demeanor also played a role: Wilkinson noted that Johnson “always looks like she’s having a good time.”

Students like James Gregg have a deep appreciation for Johnson’s talents.

“I really do love my teacher,” he said. “She is an amazing, affectionate person toward the students.” Gregg added that when Johnson helps the students, the classes become fun.

APS student-athletes welcome Atlanta Braves for ‘Caravan’ stop at The New Schools at Carver

Several schools from APS were in the audience at The New Schools at Carver as players from the Atlanta Braves players fielded questions about life in the Major Leagues. Pitchers Peter Moylan and Scott Linebrink were joined by center fielder Jordan Schafer, with WXIA/11Alive sports anchor Sam Crenshaw serving as moderator. (Crenshaw is a familiar face around APS, previously serving as keynote speaker at the 2009 Monk Jones Lecture Series.)

APS was selected as one of the sites for the annual “Braves Caravan.” Students asked questions such as the difference between playing and baseball in high school and the Major Leagues. The players also stressed the importance of being professional and consistent with everything they do.

Grady High’s mock trial team wins world championship

Congratulations go out to Grady High School‘s vaunted mock trial team, which came home this past weekend with a unique world title. Twelve members of the team, which previously place third in national competition this past summer, won the Empire City Mock Trial Association Tournament held in New York City. The team had been preparing for a case since July and had to argue both sides in the weekend competition. After racking up one of the two highest scores through the four rounds of competition, the team faced, and defeated, a home-schooled team from North Carolina.

We took some time to speak to two of the top competitors, juniors Shaun Kleber and Elizabeth McGlamry, along with attorney-coach Carl Gebo (of Adorno & Yoss), who works with the team. Kleber won an award for best attorney and best witness, while McGlamry won best overall attorney for the competition. Here they explain how that plays out, and how participating in Grady’s program makes them better students.

The school’s mock trial team keeps getting better, having placed 13th nationally in 2000, 16th in 2005, eighth in 2009 and third this year. The team faced competition from 29 other teams including teams from Ireland, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Canada. The win earned the team coverage from WXIA (11Alive). Congratulations also go out to Grady head coach Brian Leahy and their teammates: Egan Allen, Abena Amoakuh, David Bufkin, Jasmine Burnett, Atiana Johnson, Troy Kleber, Miller Lansing, Katherine Sherwood, Sam Weinstock and Alix Youngblood. Leahy was assisted by Gebo and fellow local attorney Cecily McLeod.

Fickett Elementary turns a negative into a positive with help from 11Alive, AirTran

What started out as a lamentable situation has become something inspirational after Fickett Elementary suffered a break-in over the weekend. The school’s broadcast room was robbed of important electronic equipment by thieves and vandals. That’s the bad news. The inspirational news is that WXIA (11Alive) swooped in for a visit on Monday afternoon, reported from the scene, and invited students to appear on the station’s morning show Tuesday! And in what truly has become a situation where you take lemons and make lemonade, community partner AirTran has vowed to help replace the equipment, whose estimated value is $5,000. Thanks, AirTrain!

More great Sutton Middle School news than you can wrap your eyes around

Every now and then we stumble to not just one but a whole ton of news items about the great things happening around this district. For example, earlier this week we learned that current Sutton Middle School Teacher of the Year Julie Corey, had been selected as a “Class Act” by WXIA/11Alive and would filmed this morning, with broadcasts scheduled during Saturday and Monday morning segments. We sent that out on Twitter earlier in the week, and then figured we would sit and wait for the airing and be all excited.

11Alive report emphasizes important role community partners play in supporting E. Rivers Elementary

There’s a great report on the WXIA (11Alive) Web site about how community partners and their private funding play such a crucial role in supporting Atlanta Public Schools. In this case, the report cites the incredible back-up provided to maintain the soccer field and field house and concession stands at E. Rivers Elementary — an above-average range of facilities for an elementary school. The report makes the key point:

An Atlanta Public Schools spokesman says the relationships between communities and schools have been in place for decades. Sometimes the groups provide volunteer services, but other times, it is financial. As the needs of families and schools grow, they are leaning on those relationships more. Every school has at least one partnership now in place (with a faith-based organization, community group, or business).

The school benefited from key support from Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, architect Keith Summerour as well as the school’s PTA. Principal David White points out how these partners have made the different in keeping these facilities as a vital part of the Peachtree Battle community: “This has been a real culmination of that energy. The return to public schools and the return to pride in your local public school.”

Church makes for a happy holiday at F.L. Stanton … again

Once again, Courageous Church made the holidays very special for the students at Frank L. Stanton Elementary School. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, members of the church surprised students by giving every child a toy and a school uniform for the holidays. The students were so excited and thrilled when they received their package. We heard screams of joy, laughter, and ongoing conversation about the gifts that they received. Our parents were very thankful and grateful for what Courageous Church had done again that they remained at the school after our holiday program to partake in their child’s excitement.

We say, “Again,” because Pastor Shaun King of Courageous Church, his brother, Jason King, and their members gave every child at F.L. Stanton a toy and school uniforms for the holidays last year. Pastor King volunteered as a mentor when he attended Morehouse College, so when he and his members wanted to adopt a school, Pastor King came back to F. L. Stanton School. Pastor King contacted a staff member at F. L. Stanton, Barbara Denson, who goes out and recruits mentors and tutors for F. L. Stanton, and informed her that he and his church members wanted to do something special for some special kids. And yes, those special kids were the students at F. L. Stanton School. Courageous Church became partners with F. L. Stanton last school year.

Dobbs students get a special science lesson

When first-graders at Dobbs Elementary finished their science standards, Principal Dana Evans knew how ensure young minds remembered the information. She simply called for backup. Fortunately, 11 Alive meteorologist Chesley McNeil was ready, willing and able to show students exactly how science applies to daily life.

A visit from the Channel 11 weather van kept boys and girls focused on the water table, as well as tornado safety and other science-driven elements of the weather. McNeil said that the school visits allow him to celebrate his love of science. “Third or fourth grade is when students seem to turn their attention to other things,” he said. “Anything I can do to bring that love back makes me happy.”
