We’re not exactly restaurant critics over here, but we know a great APS parent when we see one, so we couldn’t more thrilled to learn that E. Rivers Elementary parent/supporter and rock-star chef Linton Hopkins had his Restaurant Eugene named the AJC‘s 2009 Restaurant of the Year. (Guess they’d seen enough after 10 months.) Hopkins […]
As the son of a math teacher, Slater Elementary Principal For a Day Dave Cohen expected to see kids grimacing over equations — and teachers working hard to keep them focused. Instead, he saw students who were eager to answer math questions, guided by teachers who cheered their success. “There’s a lot of positive energy […]
This may have been the first time for Luz Borrero (above) — deputy COO, City of Atlanta — as Turner Middle School’s Principal for a Day, but she had plenty of experienced visitors along with her during her visit to the school on Tuesday. That’s because she was welcomed not only by Principal Karen Riggins-Taylor […]
Sometimes you really can go home again. As Dr. Gwen Benson of Georgia State University walked the halls of Dunbar Elementary, the former Atlanta Public Schools employee couldn’t help but note how far the district has come. “It’s more inclusive of students with disabilities, and there’s more support for students and principals,” said Benson, who […]
William N. Failor, president and COO of Cobbs, Allen & Hall, Inc., is no stranger to E.L. Connally Elementary School. In his third year as a participant of Principal for a Day, Failor read the book If You Give a Moose a Muffin to a kindergarten class and later treated each student to a choice of […]
Sam Massell and Jim Alexander came in from a cold and wet outside to find a bright and cheery atmosphere at Garden Hills Elementary as the school’s honorary Principals for a Day (PFAD). Massell is the Buckhead Coalition president and former Atlanta mayor, while Alexander is senior vice president for business development with Harry Norman Realtors. […]
Earlier in the day we heard from Grady High’s paper on what to look for in tomorrow’s inaugural Domecoming Football Classic at the Georgia Dome. And just as there’s more than one APS team in this extravaganza at the Georgia Dome, there’s also more than one school newspaper cranking out print journalism. Booker T. Washington […]
UPDATE: There are still more photos available in a special gallery set up on the district Web site, http://www.atlantapublicschools.us. Check out the photo gallery here. There were so many great images from today’s Peyton Forest Elementary playground build with KaBOOM! and The Home Depot, so we thought we’d offer this little photo gallery. We’ll see […]
For Peyton Forest Elementary ESOL teacher Beth Bolden (pictured, above left), the six-hour construction of an entirely new playground was the culmination of a three-year dream. For Principal Karen Barlow Brown (pictured, above right), it confirmed the commitment of her staff and the surrounding community to make her school a better place for her students. […]
A series of community meetings is scheduled for students, parents and the public to discuss the third wave of the Atlanta Public Schools’ high school transformation initiative. The latest wave of high school transformations involves Mays, North Atlanta and Grady high schools. The district’s high school transformation initiative creates smaller, 21st century learning centers where […]
