Atlanta Public School 2014 graduates from Douglass High School received more than 7 million dollars in scholarship funds. The announcement came during the graduation ceremony for the class of 2014, Friday May 23, at Atlanta’s Civic Center.

Douglass High boasted three students as Gates Millennium finalists with two students, James Scott and Romyko Winston receiving the prestigious award.  They will receive funding for their education through graduate school.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice.  The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding, African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with significant financial need an opportunity to complete a college education in any discipline area of interest.

More than 90% of the 114 graduating students stood during the graduation ceremony, affirming their plan to attend college this fall.   Several will serve their country after graduation, in the United States Armed Forces.
